I hadn’t heard of this, but Joel Salatin’s in it.
It seems timely to post this here, as I recently sent my comments to the layer subcommittee of the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board on their proposed layer standards. In a nutshell, they’ve got it set up to penalize anyone who doesn’t raise their hens in battery cages. Under the proposed standards, a hen in a caged-housing operation can have as little as 67 square inches to live in for her entire life, but if a free-range farmer doesn’t give each hen more than a hundred times that much space, he’s deemed to be treating his birds inhumanely.
